Tips to get the right running start

• Locate a specialist running shop (see FIO shoe partners below)
• Have an idea of the type of shoe you need e.g. cross trainer, running shoe
• Take you old shoes with you if they are less than 2 year old (this will help the shop look at your current running action)
• Have both feet measured so the shoe is fitted to the larger of your feet
• Ensure your foot does not slide around in the shoes
• If the shoe does not feel ‘right’ immediately try another model
• Remember the midsole cushion only lasts around 1600kms, so check for creasing in the midsole as a reminder to purchase new shoes
• Don’t buy on price – is it really worth saving a couple of bucks to end up injured?
• If you have found a model that works for you – buy the same model next time around
• Achilles tendon problems? Avoid air soles and excessively spongy heels. Ensure there is a Achilles tendon notch in the heel counter
• Stress fracture? Get a flexible shoe with plenty of cushioning, change your shoes every 640km’s or sooner
• Knee problems? – Make sure your shoe has the maximum support and stability, particularly if you are flat footed.
