How to keep your fitness cool in Summer
Keep hydrated by drinking lots of water, wear the appropriate clothing and do your workouts in the coolest part of the day or indoors.
Hot weather and your body
Performing exercise in hot weather conditions puts extra stress on your heart. That is the exercise itself and the air temperature increases your body temperature.
Keep it cool
Here are some tips on how to avoid heat-related illnesses.
- Take it slow. If exercising outdoors try to use a shaded area and slow down or train in the coolest part of the day either earlier or later in the evening If you're used to exercising indoors or in cooler weather, take it easy at first. As your body adapts to the heat, gradually increase the length and intensity of your workouts.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Your body's ability to sweat and cool down depends on adequate hydration. Drink plenty of water while you're working out — even if you don't feel thirsty, consider a sports drink at the end of your workout, these drinks can replace the sodium, chloride and potassium you lose through sweating. Avoid drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol, which actually promote further dehydration.
- Dress appropriately. Wear lighter weight clothing that is loose fitting and comfortable as clothing can promote sweat evaporation and cooling by letting more air pass over your body. Avoid darker colors, which can absorb the heat. A light-colored hat can limit your exposure to the sun, a good pair of sunglasses will also help protect your eyes.
- Wear sunscreen. Sunburn decreases your body's ability to cool itself. Always wear SPF30 or higher even if you don’t think it is that bright or sunny as sometimes this is when the RV is at its peak.
- Train Indoors. If you don’t want to miss your training due to the heat and you have the option, then train indoors this way you won’t miss out.
- Slip on a shirt, Slop on some SPF30+ sunscreen & Slap on a light colored hat
Key signs & symptoms to be wary of
Cease exercising at the first sign of a heat-related problem. Signs and symptoms may include:
- Weakness/Lethargy
- Headache/Dizziness
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea or vomiting
Remember regular exercise is very important — but it’s not worth putting your health at risk.
